Hangzhou Normal University is a key university in Zhejiang Province, a comprehensive university with a tradition of teacher education, a strong emphasis on arts and science, and a coordinated development of humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. The predecessor of the university can be traced back to Zhejiang Governmental Two-tier Normal College, one of the six higher teacher training colleges in China, which was founded in 1908, and Hangzhou Normal College was established in 1978.
In the course of 100 years of education, Hangzhou Normal University has always breathed with the times and shared the fate of the nation, promoted literature and education, succeeded the youth and blue, and continued to strengthen itself and sing, adhering to the school motto of “diligence, prudence, sincerity and forgiveness, liberal arts and refinement” and promoting “tolerance and openness, learning and progress, the pursuit of excellence “The spirit of Shidai has formed the characteristics of “humanistic school and art campus”. The university was the birthplace of the new cultural movement in Zhejiang, the first place to spread democratic and scientific ideas, and one of the birthplaces of modern Chinese education, modern Chinese art education and the early activities of the Chinese Communist Party. The school has a beautiful environment and scenery, with three campuses in Cangqian, Yuhuang Mountain and Xiasha, located in Hangzhou Future Science and Technology City, West Lake and Qiantang River respectively, covering an area of 1,923,400 square meters. The university has 24 colleges (departments) and one directly affiliated hospital (Hangzhou Second People’s Hospital), with more than 29,000 full-time students (excluding independent colleges), including 5,057 full-time master students, 79 doctoral students, and 297 international students with academic degrees. There are 2554 faculty members, including 1857 full-time teachers (75.4% of PhD), nearly 80 national and provincial high-level talents such as full-time academicians, shared academicians, Changjiang scholars of the Ministry of Education, and recipients of the National Outstanding Youth Science Foundation, etc. The university was selected as one of the first provincial innovation and entrepreneurship bases for overseas high-level talents.
The university has 1 doctoral degree authorization point for first-level disciplines and 1 doctoral degree authorization point for professional degrees; 25 master’s degree authorization points for first-level disciplines and 18 master’s degree authorization points for professional degrees. Ten disciplines, including chemistry, clinical medicine, botany and zoology, neuroscience and behavior, engineering, material science, environment and ecology, biology and biochemistry, agricultural science and mathematics, have been ranked in the top 1% of the global ESI, among which chemistry has been ranked in the top 5 percentile, and the overall ESI ranking has been in the top 100 in China for many years. “Since the 14th Five-Year Plan, the university has been awarded 14 provincial first-class disciplines.
The university is the implementation unit of the reform project of the excellent teacher training program of the Ministry of Education, the first batch of local universities implementing the national training program for college students’ innovation and entrepreneurship, and the first batch of national universities with typical experience in innovation and entrepreneurship. In recent years, the university has won 10 national teaching achievement awards. The number of National Natural Science Foundation of China and National Social Science Foundation of China is among the highest in the province, and 3 projects of National Major Scientific Research Program and National Key Research and Development Program have been awarded since 2012.
