The school is located in Nanjing’s Quixia University Town District, close to universities, with many walkable streets and parks, and easy subway access to city living around downtown Nanjing.

Living in Nanjing

Nanjing is one of China’s most culturally vibrant cities. The walled city has numerous museums and temples to explore, but don’t mistake that for it being stuck in the past. It has Asia’s largest high-speed rail station that can get you to cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Zhengzhou, Chongqing, Xiamen, and Shenyang within a few hours. The closest tier-one city, Shanghai, is 1.5 hours away by bullet train making it an easy weekend getaway. The nearby Purple Mountain offers a multitude of hiking and scenic walks just outside the city.

The school is located within a 15-minute walk to the modern metro, which offers clean, reliable, low-cost transportation to the entire city. One metro stop away is one of the city’s largest malls with an imported-goods section, and around the school’s nearest metro stop are several restaurants offering Asian and Western choices.

The school is tucked into a growing area of the city, and our neighborhood has several parks and outdoor recreational areas. But we’re just a 30-minute Didi car ride (think Uber, but less expensive) from the city center. And like most of China, you can have restaurant meals, groceries, household items, and clothing delivered to your door quickly and for either no cost or the equivalent of a few U.S. dollars.

Pero en los últimos años, a medida que más y más países hispanohablantes han establecido buenas relaciones diplomáticas con China, más estudiantes chinos han empezado a aprender español. Por ejemplo, más de cien universidades chinas ofrecen español como asignatura principal, mientras que hace aproximadamente una década, sólo un puñado de universidades de idiomas contaban con asignaturas de español.

Encontrar el puesto adecuado para enseñar español en China puede ser una tarea larga. Esto se debe a que los puestos son limitados y los profesores de español son relativamente estables. Algunos permanecen en un centro durante mucho tiempo y, cuando se abre una vacante, son muchos los profesores que compiten por ella.

Pero la cuestión es la siguiente: los contratos para extranjeros en China son anuales. Así que si quieres ir a una escuela determinada, lo mejor que puedes hacer es ponerte en contacto por correo electrónico con el jefe del departamento de español de esa escuela y hacerle ver tu currículum y tu deseo de trabajar en su escuela. Aunque no hay garantías de que todos respondan a tus correos, siempre habrá profesores interesados que te contesten. Por eso es una tarea a largo plazo. Si tienes una ciudad o un centro en mente, es mejor ser proactivo que esperar a que un día te caiga un puesto del cielo. Porque las oportunidades siempre llegan a quienes están preparados y son proactivos.

About the School of Foreign Studies, Nanjing University

The School of Foreign Studies of Nanjing University (SFS) is one of the oldest foreign language schools in China. Over the decades, it has distinguished itself in teaching, academic research and cooperation with overseas institutions. Consisted of seven language departments, i.e., English, French, Russian, German, Spanish, Japanese and Korean, the School offers a full range of degree programs as well as postdoctoral programs in foreign languages and literatures. SFS boasts faculty of extraordinary excellence, among whom 80 % are doctorate holders and 60 % professors and associate professors. Currently the School sees a total enrollment of nearly 700 undergraduates and over 600 MA and PhD students. Having established partnerships with dozens of world-renowned universities in the United Kingdom, the United States, Russia, Germany, France, Belgium, Spain, Japan, South Korea and elsewhere, SFS takes pride in hosting and participating in a variety of international projects which helps spread the school’s influence worldwide.

1. Positions

A vacancy for full-time German language teacher is now open to qualified candidates all over the world. The vacancy can be applied for at levels of lectureship, associate professorship or full professorship.

2. Requirements

• 1)The Applicant should observe Chinese laws and regulations, and demonstrate a passion for teaching and research.
• 2)The Applicant should maintain a high standard of academic and work ethics without any punishment record for violating teaching and academic ethics. Proofs of police clearance are required.
• 3)The Applicant must be native speaker of German with a PhD degree in literature, linguistics, or other specialties related to humanities or social sciences. Preference will be given to those whose research experience connects with the major areas of academic interest in German language and culture, German literature, and German studies.
• 4)The Applicant should have a good command of pedagogic skills and a flair for oral communication, and is capable of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses with competence.
• 5)The Applicant should have teaching experience in college or language schools either in China or abroad with proven excellent pedagogical skills. Special consideration will be given to holders of assistant, associate and full professorship in overseas universities.
• 6) In general, the applicant should be under 50 years of age at the time of application (born after January 1st, 1973). However, the age limit will be subject to adjustment for exceptionally excellent applicants.
