FUNSOM was founded at Soochow University in 2008, and is being led by the founding director Prof. Shuit-Tong Lee, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. At present there are 44 principal investigators conducting interdisciplinary and innovative research in different areas of nano-science and technology, including nano-optoelectronics, nano-energy, nanobiotechnology, and nanoscale interface sciences. To date FUNSOM has received over 820M RMB ($126M) in competitive National funding from NSFC, 863, 973, and other National agencies. Based on FUNSOM, the College of Nano Science and Technology (CNST), which is focusing on undergraduate teaching, is founded in 2010. CNST is the first college to provide undergraduate education of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in mainland China. CNST was approved as one of 17 “Pilot Colleges” by the Ministry of Education in October 2011, received the Outstanding Teaching Award in Jiangsu Province in 2017, and received the 2nd prize of National Higher Education Teaching Achievement in 2018. Based on FUNSOM and CNST, Collaborative Innovation Center of Suzhou Nano Science and Technology (NANO-CIC) was established and was chosen as one of the 14 “2011 Collaborative Innovation Center” by the Ministry of Education in April 2013. Base for Introducing of Talents of Discipline to Universities – Functional Optical Nanomaterials was selected in the National “111 Project”. Information of FUNSOM and CNST are available on the websites at http://funsom.suda.edu.cn/funsomen/ and http://nano.suda.edu.cn/nano_en/ .
