Professor and Head of Department of Civil Engineering

The Faculty of Engineering at The University of Hong Kong invites applications for Professor and Head of Department of Civil Engineering (Ref. 513843), to commence on July 1, 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter. The appointment as Head of Department will be made for an initial three-year term, renewable subject to mutual agreement.

The Faculty

The Faculty of Engineering, one of the two founding faculties of The University of Hong Kong, is at the forefront of engineering research, and is one of the largest Faculties in the University offering a wide range of undergraduate majors, master’s programmes and PhD degrees. The Faculty groomed more than 19,000 first-degree engineering graduates and 16,000 master’s and PhD graduates. The Faculty has over 140 professors and teaching staff.

 

The Department

The Department of Civil Engineering has around 30 faculty members and teaches more than 400 undergraduate and 500 graduate students. The Department offers a variety of academic programmes including BEng in Civil Engineering, MSc(Eng) in Civil Engineering, as well as MPhil and PhD degrees. The Department has been ranked World Top 20 in the subject rankings of the QS World University Rankings for many years.

Members of the Department are actively pursuing creative research and new technologies in Construction Engineering and Management, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, and Water and Environmental Engineering. The Department has established three research centres to facilitate interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary collaborations for impactful research within HKU and Faculty, including Centre for Environmental Engineering Research, Centre for Innovation in Construction and Infrastructure Development, and Centre for Water Technology and Policy (jointed operated with Faculty of Social Science). The Department has led/is leading many large-scale interdisciplinary competitive research projects funded by the Research Grants Council, government and industry.

The Department also maintains numerous major facilities and laboratories in the fields of construction informatics, structural engineering, modular integrated construction, environmental hydraulics, environmental engineering, net zero carbon, rock engineering, etc.

 

The Role

Reporting to the Dean of Engineering, the Head of Civil Engineering is expected to provide leadership and vision in leading and growing the Department’s research and educational missions to a new height and to lead the expansion of the Department professoriate.

The Head should possess distinguished academic credentials, with internationally acclaimed research achievements. He/She should preferably have relevant administrative experience. The successful candidate should also possess excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.

 

A wide-range of research funding opportunities exist both in Hong Kong and mainland China (far exceeding most other countries) and through interactions with government and local, regional and international industry. The University is adding major new facilities throughout Hong Kong and nearby in China. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The University will contribute up to 15% of basic salary into the retirement benefits scheme. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
