Yunnan University was founded in 1922 as the private Donglu University, renamed as the provincial Yunnan University in 1934, and changed to the National Yunnan University in 1938, which was one of the first comprehensive universities established in the western border of China. By the 1940s, Yunnan University had developed into one of China’s leading universities in the fields of literature, law, science, engineering, agriculture and medicine, and was one of the largest and most influential universities in the world.
In the 1950s, some important and distinctive departments of Yunnan University, such as aviation, civil engineering, law and railway, were transferred to the then Beijing Aviation Institute, Sichuan University, Southwest Institute of Political Science and Law, and Changsha Railway Institute; engineering, medicine and agriculture were established independently and gradually developed into today’s Kunming University of Technology, Kunming Medical University, Yunnan Agricultural University and Southwest Forestry University. In 1958, Yunnan University was transferred from the Central Ministry of Higher Education to Yunnan Province, and in 1978, it was designated by the State Council as one of the 88 key universities in China.
After the reform and opening up, Yunnan University has made great progress, and was one of the first universities to be listed in the national “211 Project” in 1996, a key institution for western development in 2001, and a key university jointly built by the Ministry of Education and Yunnan Provincial People’s Government in 2004. In 2012, it became a national institution for the implementation of “Basic Capacity Building Project for Universities in Central and Western China” and “Comprehensive Strength Improvement Project for Universities in Central and Western China”, and in 2016, it became a national institution for the implementation of “One Province, One University”. In 2016, it became a national institution implementing the project of “one province, one university”, and in 2017, it became one of the first 42 “first-class universities” in China, and in 2018, it became one of the 14 “ministry-oriented and province-co-constructed” universities in central and western China. In 2018, it was ranked among the 14 universities in central and western China that are “predominantly ministries and provinces”.
In the new historical period, Yunnan University will closely focus on the goal of building a world-class university, actively integrate into the national strategy, actively serve the economic and social development of Yunnan, follow the development concept of “open cooperation, integrated innovation, coordination and development with characteristics”, and follow the principle of “based in Yunnan, serving the country, radiating to the world”. In accordance with the development concept of “based in Yunnan, serving the country, radiating to the two Asian countries, and going to the world”, the university takes “first-class party building” as its leader, focuses on internal construction, and takes institutional reform as its driving force to vigorously implement the strategy of “academic development” and “talent strengthening”. The university is committed to implementing the strategy of “academic development” and “talent strengthening”, promoting the “Tree Trees Plan” and “Yunnan University Service Plan of Action”, improving the strength and level of school operation, and contributing to the regional economic and social development. Yunnan University has 27 colleges, 14 research institutes, one public teaching department, two independent colleges, one affiliated hospital, and a graduate school. Yunnan University has 2971 faculty members, including 2497 professional and technical positions. There are 1,930 teaching and research staff in the professional and technical positions, 445 of them have full senior titles, accounting for 23.1% of the teaching and research staff, and 845 of them have associate titles, accounting for 43.8% of the teaching and research staff. At present, there are 1136 teaching and research personnel with doctoral degrees, accounting for 58.9% of the teaching staff, and 614 with master’s degrees, accounting for 31.8% of the teaching staff. The university has 16,976 full-time undergraduate students, 7,595 master’s degree students and 1,108 doctoral degree students. The school covers an area of 4363.64 mu, distributed in Chenggong Campus and Donglu Campus, with a common school building area of more than 1 million square meters; teaching, research instruments and equipment and information technology equipment assets worth more than 938 million yuan, and a library collection of more than 3.7 million books. The university is the main node unit of China Education and Research Computer Network (CERNET) in Yunnan.
Yunnan University has 76 undergraduate majors, 12 majors with national characteristics, 6 “Elite Classes”, 10 “Excellence Classes”, 4 national key disciplines of Ethnology, Ecology, Specialized History and Microbiology, and 52 provincial key disciplines; There are 21 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees, 42 first-level disciplines authorized for master’s degrees, and 22 professional master’s degrees authorized. In the fourth round of discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education, 30 disciplines of our university were ranked in the top 70% nationwide, among which, 2 disciplines of category A (A+ for ethnology and A- for ecology) and 14 disciplines of category B. Chemistry, botany and zoology disciplines are in the top 1% of global ESI. The university has formed a comprehensive university with the advantages and characteristics of ethnology, ecology, biology, special resources development and environmental protection, as well as the study of border issues and international issues in Southeast Asia and South Asia, with a relatively complete range of disciplines and a dense pool of talents.
The university has vigorously implemented the strategy of strengthening the university with talents, and the number of high-level talents has increased rapidly. He was awarded the First Prize of National Natural Science, the First Prize of Outstanding Achievements in Humanities and Social Sciences of National Universities, the Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress, the Whitaker Distinguished Ecologist Award, and the Hodson Award of International Young Paleontologists. He has won three awards for outstanding contributions to science and technology in Yunnan Province, and three special awards. He has 15 papers published in the world famous academic journals “Nature” and “Science”. The university hosts academic journals such as “Front of Thought” and “Journal of Yunnan University”, and “Front of Thought” is one of the first eleven journals selected by the Ministry of Education for the “Famous Journal Project”.

Based on its geographical advantages, the university has been strengthening international cooperation and exchanges. The university has established a joint laboratory for optoelectronic materials with the University of Cambridge, and a joint laboratory for geographic resources of China and Nepal with Tribhuvan University and Sichuan Institute of Mountain Research of the Ministry of Science and Technology. It has also established four overseas Confucius Institutes in Iran, Bangladesh and Myanmar, and the “One Belt One Road Chinese Promotion Base for South and Southeast Asian Countries” of the Hanban, and initiated the establishment of the “South and Southeast Asian University Consortium”. “The university has also established the South Asia Southeast Asia University Consortium.
The university actively serves the national and regional economic and social development. The university has undertaken the translation, publication and promotion of Xi Jinping Talks about Governance (Volumes I and II) in Myanmar, Laos and other five languages; the report on “China-Myanmar Oil and Gas Pipeline and China’s Energy Security” and the Southern Silk Road Economic Corridor have been promoted as major national decisions; the study on ancient maps of the South China Sea ” to provide a physical basis for China’s sovereignty disputes in the South China Sea; “Yangzonghai arsenic pollution control”, “cross-border ecological security and international river study”, “digital Yunnan “Research”, “Lake – Basin Rural Surface Source Pollution Management Core Technology System” in Dianchi Basin and other scientific research achievements directly serve to solve major real-life problems.
