Hunan University of Technology is a comprehensive university with a history of over 60 years. In February 2006, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the university was renamed from Zhuzhou Institute of Technology to Hunan University of Technology, and in the same year, Zhuzhou Normal College and Hunan Metallurgical Vocational and Technical College were merged; during the course of operation, Hunan Urban Construction School and Hunan Provincial Finance and Accounting School were incorporated. The history of the school can be traced back to the founding of the Zhuzhou Normal School in 1958.
Featuring packaging education, the school was the first member of the International Association of Packaging (IAPRI) to be accepted in China, the director of the Packaging Education Committee of the China Packaging Federation, and the only vice-president of the China Packaging Federation and the China Packaging Technology Training Centre among universities nationwide.
In 1995, as one of the first pilot institutions, the university was the first to pass the qualified assessment of undergraduate teaching work by the former State Education Commission, and was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council as a master’s degree awarding unit in 2003. In 2013, the university was awarded the title of “Top 50 Universities with Typical Experience in Graduate Employment”. In 2021, the university was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council as a doctoral degree granting unit, and “Materials Science and Engineering” was approved as a first-level discipline doctoral degree authorizing point.
The University has two campuses, covering a total area of 3,853.7 acres. The total construction area of the library is 55,430.29 square meters, with a collection of more than 2,832,700 books; the total value of teaching and research instruments and equipment is 404 million yuan, with 8,297 digital terminals. The university has a more advanced computer network service system, a standard plastic athletic field, a gymnasium and various sports grounds to meet the needs of physical education.
The university has 22 teaching colleges and one independent college, and has established a discipline system with engineering as the main focus and coordinated development of engineering, science, management, literature, economics, law, agriculture, education and art. There are 14 national first-class undergraduate courses, 6 national high-quality (resource sharing) courses, 109 provincial first-class undergraduate courses and 17 provincial high-quality courses. There are 30,568 full-time students, including 41 doctoral students, 2,570 master’s students, 27,086 undergraduate students and 306 specialist students. The university has a “world-class cultivation discipline” in Hunan Province, materials science and engineering, “domestic double-class construction discipline” design; materials science, engineering science, chemistry, biology and biochemistry four disciplines among the top 1% of the global ESI ranking; has “Advanced Packaging Materials Research and Development Technology” and “National Packaging Advertising Research Base” are two national research platforms, with “biomedical nano-materials and devices It has 8 key laboratories in Hunan Province, including “Biomedical Nano Materials and Devices” and “Biomass Fiber Functional Materials”, 2 engineering laboratories in Hunan Province, 4 engineering research centres in Hunan Province, 3 “2011 Collaborative Innovation Centers” in Hunan Higher Education Institutions. and 48 provincial-level research platforms such as “Product Packaging Innovation Industrial Design Centre” and “Packaging Design Art and Technology Research Base”; jointly established with Hunan Fifth Engineering Co. In recent years, the university has undertaken 10 national-level educational reform projects and 235 provincial-level educational reform projects; it has won one national-level teaching achievement award and 41 provincial-level teaching achievement awards. The university has published 15,140 academic research papers, including 1,823 indexed by SCI, EI and ISTP; it has undertaken 308 national research projects, including 1 major and 4 key projects of the National Social Science Foundation of China, and 1,477 provincial and ministerial research projects; it has won 4 national scientific and technological progress awards and 2 Ministry of Education’s Eighth Outstanding Achievement Awards for Scientific Research in Higher Education (Humanities and Social Sciences). The university has been awarded 4 second prizes of national scientific and technological progress, 2 prizes of the Ministry of Education for the 8th Outstanding Achievements in Scientific Research in Higher Education (Humanities and Social Sciences) (1 second prize and 1 third prize each), 13 prizes for outstanding achievements in social sciences in Hunan Province (including 2 first prizes), 1 first prize for achievements in natural sciences in Hunan Province, 73 prizes for scientific and technological achievements at provincial and ministerial levels and 977 patents. The project of “Industrialization and Development of Key Technologies and Complete Sets of Equipment for Special Indoor Environment Purification”, led by the university, was awarded the third batch of major science and technology special projects by the Provincial Science and Technology Department in 2010. “The project “Key Technology and Demonstration of Energy Saving in Cold Winter and Hot Summer Areas” was funded by the National 12th Five-Year Plan Science and Technology Support Project.
The University established the Dongguan Packaging Institute in Guangdong Province as a practical teaching base and talent service window for the University in the coastal region; the Joint Research Centre on Global Low Carbon Cities, jointly established with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, completed a major research project on the ranking of low carbon cities in China through a survey of nearly 100 cities across the country, and from 2011 The university also signed a comprehensive scientific and technological cooperation agreement with Zhuzhou Municipal People’s Government and organised 11 project leaders to sign industry-university-research cooperation agreements with relevant units in Zhuzhou. The school has also hosted large-scale international academic conferences such as the 2010 Beijing International Packaging Expo – China Packaging Education Exhibition.
At present, the school has established comprehensive cooperation with the University of Arizona, the State University of New York, California State University and the University of Akron in the United States, the University of Derby and the University of Lincoln in the United Kingdom, Macquarie University and the University of New South Wales in Australia, the University of Applied Sciences in Stuttgart in Germany, Suwon University in South Korea, Sage University in Japan, the University of Malaya in Malaysia, the Nelson Mandela Institute of Science and Technology in Tanzania, the City University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Macau University of Science and Technology, City University of Macau and other renowned universities and research institutes outside of China have established extensive research collaboration and academic exchange relationships.
