Requirements

I. Introduction of the Institute

The Institute of Modern Biology of Nanjing University focuses on original basic biomedical research, encourages and supports pioneering and systematic scientific exploration, and strives to become a world-class biomedical research innovation center with a group of internationally recognized academic authorities and a “scholarly research environment”. The dean of Institute of Modern Biology takes full responsibilities of all institutional affairs. And the institute applies tenure-track/tenured professorship with highly autonomy on personnel, financial professorial recruitment, academic and tenured-evaluation. Graduate student training system here are also in line with top international universities. At present the institute has two tenured professors, Professor Anning Lin and Professor Ke Shuai. They were respectively tenured professors at the University of Chicago and the University of California, Los Angeles. The six assistant professors in the tenure-track are all with outstanding overseas postdoctoral training experience and have achieved innovative research results of international top level. The Institute has established partnerships with Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital and Jiangbei Core Business District. The institute has a group of internationally renowned scholars with large influence as scientific advisory committee to provide advices on strategic and institution development.

 

II. The Positions

The Institute of Modern Biology of Nanjing University plans to recruit young scholars who are interested in engaging in basic research at the frontier of biomedicine to work in the Institute of Modern Biology for the whole world. The proposed recruitment positions are for tenure-track assistant professors, and the total number of recruitments is, in principle, no more than four. Specific fields of research open for recruitment are:

(1) Computer simulation and bio-artificial intelligence

(2) Infection, immunity and metabolic mechanism

(3) Molecular mechanisms of major diseases such as cancer and neurodegenerative diseases

(4) Gene editing

(5) Innovative Drug Discovery and Precision medicine

 

III. Conditions for Application

The applicant should

1. abide by the laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China, and have a passion for teaching and research;

2. abide by the ethics of teachers, uphold academic integrity, be willing to work diligently, and have no criminal record or record in breaching the ethics of teachers and/or academic integrity;

3. have a first-rate background in academic training—specifically, a PhD in relevant disciplines, experience in studying and/or working at first-rate teaching and research institutions, and knowledge of the latest international trends and development in the relevant research field(s); The applicant for Assistant Professor and Associate Professor should have a complete and outstanding postdoctoral training experience and have achieved innovative research results of international first-class level, and be able to carry out innovative research independently.

4. have outstanding teaching abilities—the applicant should be able to teach core and frontline courses in the corresponding discipline, and have sound teaching methodology and strong verbal skills;

5. demonstrate outstanding research output and potential—the applicant should have publications in his/her field of research, original ideas about relevant fields of research, a clear vision about future research plans, and good potential for further academic development.

BACKGROUND

In April 2020, China’s Ministry of Education approved the establishment of Haide College, a cooperative institution between Ocean University of China (OUC) and the University of Adelaide (UoA) in Australia. Haide College offers three four-year undergraduate programs, Biotechnology, Food Sciences and Engineering, and Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, with its maximum enrollment capacity of 1200 students. Haide College is located in Laoshan Campus (main campus) of OUC, Qingdao, Shandong province.

Upholding the principle of “featured school-running by combing the Chinese and Western cultures”, the College adopts the international collegiate education and management system in the new era in light of the teaching philosophy of “offering professional knowledge based on liberal education”. With the educational merits of China and Australia, it introduces quality teaching resources to offer students world-class faculty and curriculum. The College is expected to help build an internationalized OUC on its way to becoming a “World First-Class University ” and serving the interests of national strategies and local economic development.

OUC is a comprehensive university with particular strengths in oceanography and fisheries science. In 2017, it was included in China’s plan of building “World First-Class University”, having previously also been on the list of “Project 985” universities (a list of China’s top 40 universities) and “Project 211” institutions ((a list of China’s top 100 universities).

UoA is a public university located in Adelaide, South Australia. Established in 1874, it is the third-oldest university in Australia. UoA is a member of the Group of Eight and has been named one of the five-star universities of Australia. It has ranked in top 1% of universities all over the world in recent years. Ranking 73th in 2021 US News & World Reports, and 106th in 2021 QS World University Rankings.

 

REQUIREMENTS

  1. Basic Requirementsapplicants should:

(1) Obey OUC regulations, love education, be excellent in character, have rigorous scholarship and behave with integrity.

(2) Be familiar with personnel training, have rich teaching experience, and be able to teach core professional courses.

  1. Haide Assistant Professor

(1) Participate in top-flight professional construction, personnel training plan formulation, and teaching quality assurance system construction.

(2) Participate in high-level teaching researches and programs for writing teaching materials,, and actively produce high-level teaching results.

(3) Hold lectures and seminars regularly.

(4) Undertake the undergraduate courses, and be responsible for lesson preparation and other teaching tasks.

(5) Actively carry out advanced scientific research relying on the Sino-Australian Center for Smart Ocean Research, and cultivate top-notch innovative talents.

(6) Keep good communication with students. Be responsible for guiding students’ study, including student practice class, report, seminar, student field visit, etc.

(7) Participate in administrative affairs related to the courses, such as attending faculty meetings of Haide college, etc.

 

SALARY AND BENEFITS

  1. The annual salary system is adopted.

Haide Professor: RMB 500,000- 600,000.

Haide Associate Professor: RMB 350,000- 450,000.

Haide Assistant Professor: RMB 250,000- 320,000.

Annual salary consists of basic salary and performance salary. Among them, the basic salary accounts for 80% of the annual salary and is paid monthly. Performance salary accounts for 20% of the annual salary, which is paid at one go at the end of the year according to assessment.

  1. Those who meet the requirements can apply for all kinds of national and local talent benefits.
  2. Those who meet the postdoctoral requirements can apply for postdoctoral benefits in Qingdao. According to Detailed Rules for the Implementation of Funding for Postdoctoral Training in Qingdao (Issued by Qingdao Human Resources and Social Security Bureau[2019]No.3),as following:

(1) Postdoctoral living and housing subsidies. The living and housing subsidy of RMB 60,000 per person per year shall be paid to postdocs (excluding on-the-job personnel) in the station, subject to the actual time in the station, no more than two years at most. The total amount shall not exceed RMB 120,000.

(2) Subsidies for postdoctoral settlement. RMB 250,000 will be given to postdocs who leave the station after June 6, 2018 (subject to the final approval time of China’s Postdoctoral System) and go through employment procedures in Qingdao within 6 months after leaving the station and settle down in Qingdao, excluding those who have been in Qingdao and in-service before entering the station.

二、岗位基本职责

1.制定学科发展和科学研究规划并组织实施,聘期内使主导的学科研究方向在国内处于领先水平。

2.组织申报省级重点实验室或平台,申报国家级/省级基金项目。

3.加强团队建设,打造高水平创新学科团队,建设一支政治信念牢、科研水平高、创新能力强的科研队伍。

4.积极开展与国内外顶尖大学或科研机构的合作,建立长期稳定的合作关系,显著提升学科国内外影响力。

II. Basic Responsibilities of the Position

1. Formulate and implement the plans of discipline development and scientific research. During the employment, the leaded research direction should be at the leading level in China.

2. Organize the application of provincial key laboratories or platforms, and apply for national / provincial fund projects.

3. Focus on team construction, build a high-level innovative discipline team with firm political conviction, high scientific research level and strong innovative ability.

4. Actively carry out cooperation with top universities or scientific research institutions both domestic and abroad, establish long-term and stable cooperative relations, and significantly enhance the influence of the discipline both domestically and abroad.

三、招聘条件

1.遵守中华人民共和国宪法和法律法规,学风正派、治学严谨、为人师表。

2.有较强的组织管理、团队协作和统筹协调能力。

3.在本学科领域科研水平或技术成果处于国内外领先地位,具有引领性和重要价值;对本学科科研发展具有创新性和前瞻性构想,具备带领本学科建设进入国内外前列的优秀领导能力。

4.身心健康,年龄一般不超过50周岁,学术业绩特别突出者,年龄可适当放宽。

III. Recruitment Requirement

1. Abide by the constitution, laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China. Have a decent style of study, be rigorous in academic research, and be a model for others.

2. Have strong ability in organizational management, teamwork and overall coordination.

3. The scientific research or academic achievement in the discipline is in a leading position both domestically and abroad; have innovative and forward-looking visions for the scientific development of this discipline, and have excellent leadership to promote the construction of this discipline to the forefront both domestically and abroad.

4. People who are physically and mentally healthy under 50 years old. The age can be appropriately relaxed for people with outstanding academic achievements.

四、聘期及待遇

1.聘期为五年。三年中期考核,五年期满考核,期满考核合格可续聘;

2.年薪人民币100万元起(税前);科研运营经费500-1000万;

3.提供充足的办公实验室用房,支持整合组建科研团队,硕士招生指标予以政策性倾斜;

4.提供住房一套;解决配偶工作及子女入学;提供附属医院便捷就医条件和新乡市医疗保障;

5.对工作和生活条件有特殊要求的可具体面议。

以上待遇具体落实根据聘用情况采取“一人一议”。

IV. Employment Term and Remuneration

1. The term of employment is five years. Mid-term assessment will be held in three years; expiration assessment will be held in five years. The contract can be renewed for candidates who pass the assessment upon the expiration of the contract.

2. Annual salary ≥1 million (Pre-tax income); The startup funding is RMB 5 to10 million;

3. Provide sufficient office and laboratory space, support the integration and establishment of scientific research teams, and give policy preference in recruiting graduates for master’s training;

4. Provide accommodation, jobs for spouse and admission qualifications (middle and primary school) for children; convenient medical conditions in the affiliated hospitals and medical insurance in Xinxiang City are also provided;

5. If there are special requirements for working and living conditions, they can be negotiated face to face.
