Fujian Polytechnic Normal University (FPNU) is a public four-year university approved by China’s Ministry of Education. It was established on the basis of Fuqing Branch of Fujian Normal University and is administered by Fujian Provincial Government. FPNU is located in Fuqing, a millennium-old coastal city in the eastern part of Fujian Province, an emerging modern industrial port city and a well-known hometown of overseas Chinese.
Founded in 1977, the University started offering bachelor’s degree programs in 2002. In 2019, it was renamed Fujian Polytechnic Normal University with the approval of Ministry of Education. FPNU is dedicated to cultivating practical skill-oriented professionals and teachers for vocational education. It is the only university in Fujian Province that cultivates teachers for vocational education
Scale: Currently, the University consists of two campuses: Wumashan and Shizhushan, with a total land area of 748 hectares, and 2,000 hectares of planned land for the new campus. FPNU comprises 12 secondary schools with 30 bachelor’s degree programs, including four provincial first-tier programs in Food Science & Engineering, Environmental Engineering, International Economics & Trade and Packaging Engineering, and one master’s program. The University’s undergraduate enrolment exceeds 7,500 and is expected to reach 15,000 in 2025.
Facilities: The University boasts a complete range of teaching and research facilities, and a library with a large collection of books (including e-books). There are all kinds of provincial platforms of education and scientific research, teaching demonstration centers, as well as off-campus professional training bases (centers) and continuing education bases. There are also national occupational skill testing authorities and education bases for training vocational ability and quality.
Teaching Faculty: Currently, the University has a teaching staff of over 400, and 55% of them are full professors or associate professors and 80% of them hold a master’s or doctoral degree. There are scholars entitled to State Council Special Allowance and awarded the titles of Outstanding Scholars and Experts, Celebrated Cultural Experts, National Young Talents of Publicity and Cultural Information, Young and Middle-aged Talents in Ideological and Political Education (Ministry of Education), Two Hundred Talents Project supported by Fujian Province and Minjiang River Scholars Program.
Scientific Research: There are provincial research and innovation platforms as well as research institutions such as Fuzhou expert workstations and industry technology innovation centers. There are also Huangbo Culture and Maritime Silk Road Institute, Institute of Oceanology and the Arts and Crafts Institute. In recent years, FPNU has undertaken more than 900 government-sponsored research projects both at national and provincial levels, in addition to projects commissioned by the government, enterprises and institutions, and has obtained nearly 260 authorized patents.
Employment and Entrepreneurship: FPNU’s graduate employment rate remains above 98%, and the rate of FPNU graduates being admitted to master’s degrees is one of the highest among comparable universities in Fujian province. FPNU has a provincial entrepreneurship incubation base for college graduates. It has built a joint fund project with enterprises for the national innovation and entrepreneurship training program of the Ministry of Education, and has made many achievements in the “Challenge Cup” extra-curricular academic science and technology works competition and the provincial “Internet+” college students’ innovation and entrepreneurship competition.
Campus Culture: Provincial Chinese Excellent Traditional Culture Education Demonstration Base, Provincial Excellent Forum on Philosophy as well as Social Sciences and One Hundred Talents’ Forum, a high-end talent exchange platform for experts of Fujian’s “Hundred Talents Program” were set up in FPNU. FPNU is the only university that has an equestrian team. FPNU has characteristic campus culture brands, including Scholarly Campus, Happy Entrepreneurship and Night Talk under Camphor Trees, etc. Nobel Prize winner Mo Yan, Academician Liu Changsheng of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Academician Qu Jinping of the Chinese Academy of Engineering have attended various forums in the university and given guidance.
Opening-up Activities: FPNU has been actively connected with the “Belt and Road” Initiative, established cooperative relations with more than 30 universities and research institutions outside Mainland China, carried out student exchange programs and joint doctoral-student education programs with more than 20 universities in Taiwan, and equipped with enrollment qualifications for students from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, and overseas Chinese and foreign students.
Social Services: Based on southeast Fujian, FPNU is deeply integrated into the regional socio-economic development, and closely follows the industry development needs. FPNU actively promotes the integration of industries and education, school-enterprise cooperation, and collaborates with industrial parks, industry alliances, and leading enterprises to build nine industrial colleges and four industry research institutes.
