The University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) is a science and technology university affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, focusing on frontier science and high technology, with medical, management and humanities disciplines. The university has 31 colleges (departments), including 8 colleges of science and education integration; Suzhou Institute of Advanced Studies, Shanghai Research Institute, Beijing Research Institute, Institute of Advanced Technology, Institute of International Finance, and the First Affiliated Hospital (Anhui Provincial Hospital).
The university was founded in September 1958 in Beijing, with Guo Moruo as the first president. It is a red university founded by our Party, and it is a university established for the cause of “two bombs and one star”, and its foundation is called “a major event in the history of education and science in China”. After the establishment of the university, the Chinese Academy of Sciences implemented the policy of “running the university as a whole and combining the institutes and departments” to cultivate cutting-edge scientific and technological talents in emerging, marginal and cross-disciplines from a high starting point and with a wide caliber, which brought together a number of famous scientists such as Yan Jizi, Hua Luogeng, Qian Xuesen, Zhao Zhongyao, Guo Yonghuai, Zhao Jiuzhang and Bei Shizhang. In the second year of its establishment, the university was listed as a national key university.
Since 1978, the university has been the first in China to propose and implement a series of innovative and forward-looking educational reform measures, such as the establishment of the Junior Class, the first graduate school, the construction of the National Science Project, and the opening of the university to the world, making it an important base for the cultivation of high-quality talents and high-level scientific research. In September 2017, the university was selected as one of the first batch of world-class universities and world-class disciplines in China, and 11 disciplines were selected as world-class disciplines. Over the past 60 years since its establishment, the university has adhered to the university motto of “Red Specialization and Integration of Science and Practice”, dared to be a pioneer and forged ahead, cultivated a large number of outstanding talents with both moral and talent, achieved a series of world-renowned scientific research results, and made important contributions to the development of the Party and the country.
