Dalian Jiaotong University was founded in 1956 as Dalian Rolling Stock Manufacturing School in response to the development of China’s railway rolling stock industry, and was upgraded to Dalian Railway Institute in 1958, under the management of the former Ministry of Railways. In May 2004, it was renamed Dalian Jiaotong University.
During its long history, the university has always adhered to its mission and served the regional economy and society, the development of the rail transportation industry and the national strategic needs, forming the spirit of “strict and practical, tough and persistent” and the school motto of “Mingde and perseverance”. The school has trained more than 100,000 graduates, most of whom are employed in the rail transportation industry, and some of them have become industry leaders and core technical backbone, and enjoy the reputation of “cradle of engineers in China’s rail transportation equipment manufacturing industry” in the industry.
The school has two campuses, Shahekou Campus and Lushunkou Campus, covering a total area of 821,000 square meters, with a total building area of 541,000 square meters. The total value of teaching and research instruments and equipment is 396 million yuan, and the total amount of library resources is 1,323,200 volumes, 1,592,400 electronic books and 41,254 electronic journals in Chinese and foreign languages.
The university has the right to grant doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s degrees, and is a key construction university of first-class disciplines in Liaoning Province. Two disciplines of mechanical engineering and materials science and engineering are the first-class disciplines in Liaoning Province; three disciplines of mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering and transportation engineering are the first-class key disciplines in the province. It has 2 post-doctoral research stations in mechanical engineering and materials science and engineering, 2 first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degree, 13 first-level disciplines authorized for master’s degree, 6 master’s degree authorized categories, 49 undergraduate majors and 5 five-year double majors, covering 7 disciplines including engineering, management, literature, science, economics, law and art. At present, there are 18,727 full-time students, including 15,633 undergraduates and 3,094 master and doctoral students.
The university has the qualification of recommending excellent fresh undergraduates to be exempted from taking postgraduate courses. In October 2006, the university passed the evaluation of undergraduate teaching work level by the Ministry of Education with “excellent” score. The university has 16 national first-class undergraduate majors, 2 national pilot majors of comprehensive reform, 5 pilot majors of the excellent engineer education training program of the Ministry of Education, and 8 majors of China Engineering Education Certification; 4 provincial first-class undergraduate majors, and 42 provincial first-class undergraduate education demonstration majors, specialty majors, key support majors, application-oriented transformation majors, and innovation and entrepreneurship education reform pilot construction sites. 42 majors. There are 1 national modern industrial college, 1 national virtual simulation experimental teaching center, 4 national engineering practice education centers, 2 provincial modern industrial colleges, 17 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 14 provincial off-campus practice education bases for college students, 35 provincial undergraduate courses of excellence and 61 provincial first-class courses. In the past three years, students have won 1487 national and provincial science and technology competitions, including 21 national first prizes.
The university has 970 full-time teachers, including 179 professors and 334 associate professors, and teachers with master’s and doctoral degrees account for about 92% of the total number of teachers. There are 1 expert of National High-level Overseas Talent Introduction Program, 1 leader of National High-level Talent Special Support Program, 1 candidate of National Major Talent Project, 1 recipient of National Outstanding Youth Science Foundation, 1 young candidate of National Major Talent Project, 1 chief scientist of National Key Research and Development Program, 2 national candidates of Hundred Million Talent Project, 11 recipients of Special Allowance of the State Council There are 15 provincial and ministerial experts with outstanding contributions, climbing scholars, special professors and excellent experts, and 86 candidates of the provincial “Ten Hundred Thousand High-end Talents Introduction Project” and One Hundred Million Levels. The university has 9 provincial-level teaching teams, including 2 teams of Huang Danian-type teachers in Liaoning universities, and 7 provincial-level scientific research innovation teams.
The university is an advanced unit of national industry-university-research cooperation, and an innovation base of industry-university-research cooperation in Liaoning Province. It has initiated the establishment of “China Rail Transportation Equipment Manufacturing Innovation Alliance”, and led the establishment of “Liaoning Rail Transportation Industry School-Enterprise Alliance” and “Continuous Extrusion Industry Innovation Alliance”. The university has built 39 national and provincial science and technology platforms, social science bases and think tanks, such as the National University Science and Technology Park, the National Local Joint Engineering Research Center, the Engineering Center of the Ministry of Education, the National Technology Transfer Demonstration Institution, and the Industrial Research Institute of Liaoning Higher Education Institution. In recent years, the university has undertaken or participated in 115 national projects such as National Key Research and Development Program, National Natural Science Foundation of China and National Social Science Foundation of China, and 742 projects at provincial and ministerial levels; received 26 awards at provincial and ministerial levels; published more than 3,000 high-level papers, 323 academic books and 444 authorized invention patents.
The university is a Chinese government scholarship institution for international students and an experimental base for cultivating innovative talents under the 121 Project of the China-US Talent Development Program. The university has established inter-university cooperation with more than 100 institutions and educational and research institutions in 23 countries and regions, including Australia, the United States, Japan and Russia. The university has been approved by the Ministry of Education to establish a Sino-foreign cooperative institution – Dalian Jiaotong University Yuanjiaotong University Traffic College. It has 3 undergraduate education programs through Sino-foreign cooperation and has built the Sino-Japanese Dalian Talent Training Center.
